Teachers know how to test for student progress. The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the pupil.
Rationale 1: I developed this rubric to assess the students on the final projects they created through the use of a WebQuest to learn about the Southeast Region of the United States. This was part of a 4th grade social studies unit. The students worked in cooperative groups to learn about an assigned state on a WebQuest. The students then shared their final projects with the rest of the class. The rubric allowed me to have an accurate record of student performance.
Rubrics are an essential method to assess students. Objectives are clearly defined and students are given very detailed feedback, including strengths and weaknesses, on their assignments. I give students a copy of the rubric prior to them commencing work in order to give them specific guidelines to follow. Using rubrics has helped me to relay to students specific guidelines that need to be followed. This allows students to take ownership and accountability in the work they turn in. The responsibility is put on the student to get the grade they want to achieve by following the rubric. There are no surprises and students gain valuable information from the feedback. Rubrics are also a valuable tool for parents to see how their child is assessed.

By constructing my own rubrics, I am able to create a detailed guideline for my students to follow of the expectations. By using rubrics, students become more responsible for their work and accountable for their grade. Rubrics are very easy to make on the internet and can be created to assess all standards. They are very well defined to leave little room for error in assessment. Students are able to get positive as well as negative feedback to help them in the future.

By giving students a copy of the rubrics when assignments are introduced, they are made aware of what the expectations are so that they can monitor their progress continuously. They can complete a self-assessment before they hand in their final product to ensure completeness and accuracy. This will make them aware of areas that they need to work on as well as their personal strengths.

It is my preference to have students preview the assessment rubric prior to turning in their assignments to allow them to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Also, by me filling in the detailed rubric, they are able to confirm where their strengths and weaknesses are.
